How bright should a kitchen be?
Aim for 30–40 lumens per square foot of ambient light — roughly triple a bedroom. A 12 × 12 ft kitchen (144 sq ft) needs about 4,300–5,800 lumens overall, usually split across several recessed cans or a couple of fixtures. Don’t try to get all of it from one bulb.
What color temperature for a kitchen?
3000K keeps an open-plan kitchen feeling warm and consistent with an adjoining living or dining area. If your kitchen is a dedicated workspace and you want a crisper, more energetic feel, 3500–4000K is excellent. Going above 4000K starts to look cold; below 3000K can feel dim for detailed work.
